How Safe Are You With All The Police Cutbacks?

Chicago has jumped into first place in the race for murders per capita. It used to be New Orleans or Washington D.C. but Chicago now is a clear winner. What a claim to fame! The Bay Area city of Oakland, California receives a lot of publicity about crime as well, but they blame it on the economy. And that may be at least partially true. For many cities the increase in crime is due to a decrease in response time by law enforcement to calls for help either for home security or crimes against persons such as assaults or robberies.
The slower response times are due to budget cutbacks that have affected every city in the country. This affects everyone's personal safety and security. Recently, one city was so badly decimated by budget cuts that it literally fired all of its police officers and then rehired them the next day without all the budget busting union benefits.
We're all for providing benefits to law enforcement officers and our firefighters, but when there is no way that a retirement program can sustain itself over even the short-term, something's got to give.
Over one year ago in Colorado Springs, Colorado Sheriff Terry Maketa was unsuccessfully lobbying city council for more funds to hire deputies. Of course it takes money, and Colorado Springs is like every other city in the country affected by the recession and short on funds. So the answer was always NO!
So what did Sheriff Maketa do? He got an initiative on last November's ballot that called for a small tax increase over the next eight years and then it would automatically expire. It was approved by 64% of the voters. This enabled him to hire nearly 60 more deputies and provide for their training.
The Milwaukee, Wisconsin sheriff takes a completely different approach. He is asking citizens to assume personal safety as their responsibility. He took out an ad that was on the radio and asked "residents to learn how to handle a firearm so they can defend themselves while waiting for police" to arrive at a crime scene.
In the alternative, since many people do not like to handle firearms he is suggesting that they arm themselves with self-defense products and home security products. People have a responsibility for their own self-defense. Police can't be everywhere all the time. They should do it for their own personal safety and personal protection.
He decided to take this approach because he viewed the public as a largely untapped resource for help in combating crime.
